On that very day, when the thunder of the cannons was heard from afar, Nili went down to the beach,
like many thousands of other Tel-Aviv residents. It was a warm day in the middle of winter. Under other circumstances,
such a day would be ideal for spending the day at the beach. The irritating and monotonous noise of scores of helicopters
hovering in the Tel-Aviv skies like a surreal image, cut the air. Nili tried to approach the beach in the vicinity of the Dan Hotel,
however she and the crowd of tens of thousands of Israeli citizens, were rudely pushed back by the human chain comprised
of many hundreds of Marines. In the final hours, an improvised barbed wire fence, shaped like a funnel,
was stretched from the American Embassy to the beach, to buffer between the American soldiers and the citizens of Israel.
Hundreds of people passed through the narrow opening on their way from the point of assembly at the base of the
American Embassy in Tel-Aviv, directly towards the American Marines who landed on the Tel-Aviv beach.

Controlled rage could be seen on the faces of the crowd, as well as fear. With exhausted eyes,
the citizens of Israel watched how hundreds of foreign residents and Israeli citizens with foreign citizenship turned
towards the amphibians, which took them out to sea, where they were evacuated by ships of the Sixth Fleet.
A number of Israeli youths swum towards the ships which anchored about a kilometer off-shore,
however before they reached the ships they were picked up by American sailors in rubber boats and
unceremoniously returned to the Tel-Aviv beach.

The sight reminded many of the Tel-Aviv elders of the days of the British Mandate.

The helicopters in the skies constituted an aerial umbrella to secure the passage of the foreign citizens from Israel
to the end of their nightmare. There they boarded the decks of the Sixth Fleet,
and gazed upon the masses left on the shore.

Nili well remembered how a black Marine rudely pushed her and another few citizens back.
She had approached him and looked deep into his eyes, silently, without words,
until he averted his gaze to the ground. From there she returned to her small apartment.

At dusk, black mushroom clouds of smoke appeared in the skies of the Tel-Aviv vicinity and the horizon
was completely enveloped in black clouds which billowed over the city in the final light of sunset.
